There is nothing like winning an award to highlight your exceptional service and quality of your workmanship and that’s why we think the Garage of the Year Award is worth entering.

The latest in our A-Z of running a garage looks at why we think you should enter the Garage of the Year Award. Our A-Z series is packed with tips, advice and ideas to help you become an even more successful small business.

To be considered for Garage of the Year, your customers need to have written reviews about your business on your profile page on the Motor Codes website. By so doing, your customers highlight your exemplary service, professional conduct and reliability thereby attracting additional customers to your business. So, even if you don’t have enough reviews (yet) to be considered for the award, your business cannot lose. In the days of consumer comparisons and business reviews, your garage needs to have its fair share of voice and Motor Codes provides a straightforward way of ensuring your business has its place on the bandwagon.

There’s still time to be considered for Garage of the Year 2015, however, especially if you are already a signed up member of Motor Codes, if not, just register on the website. Motor Codes is approved by the Trading Standards Institute and includes its Service and Repair Code guaranteeing customers a certain level of care and service and currently boasts some 8,000 subscribing garages.

Once you have signed up to Motor Codes, you will be able to create your own profile page on the Motor Codes website which is where customers can upload their reviews of your business and, of course, other would-be customers can find them to help make their mind up about using your garage.  All you have to do is ask your customers to review your garage on the website.

By promoting your garage as a member of Motor Codes, you are showing your willingness to be accountable and adhere to the government-backed code of conduct instilling even more confidence in your business. Encouraging your customers to write reviews about your business creates an open and transparent approach which can have a huge impact on your garage as consumers today are eager to obtain the views of others before deciding where to purchase goods and services. Don’t be afraid of any negative comments, as long as you deal with them quickly and honestly, you are more likely to turn a dissenter into an advocate.

In order to enter the competition itself, you have to log in and answer a series of questions regarding areas such as your customer care and your commitment to keeping your technical skills up-to-date and your customer reviews will also be taken into consideration. During last year’s competition period, customers left more than 13,000 online reviews which the judges assessed to decide their winner along with their unannounced garage inspections.

To be considered for this year’s competition, applications have to be made by 31st May and regional winners will be notified by 3rd June 2015. A panel of external judges decides the national winners who are also invited to attend the Auto Express Car of the Year awards which takes place on the 30th June where the winner will be crowned Garage of the Year.

There are a host of materials that garages can use to promote the competition including web banners for your website. In addition, all customers who leave a review will be entered into a prize draw to win one of three supercar experiences at Thruxton along with a stay at the award-winning Essen Manor.

As well as the Garage of the Year competition promotional material, as a signatory to Motor Codes, garages are able to display Trading Standards approved branding, an automatic confidence booster to any motorist contemplating using your business.

Just joining Motor Codes can give your business an extra boost to attract more customers, the review section will reap huge benefits as consumers today are reluctant to use a garage or service, book a holiday, eat at a restaurant or even buy a product without reading what other consumers have to say. Plus, you could end up with enough positive reviews to be in the running for this year’s Garage of the Year competition. Meanwhile, as we said, there’s always next year. Good luck, you’ve got our vote!
